Reading Club

Reading Club a Hit!

Alexandria Avenue Elementary’s first ever zero period reading club got under way this October, thanks in part to Juan Carlos Bernal, mild-mannered instructor.  Mr. Bernal recruited fifth grade students to attend the reading club daily from 7:15 am to 7:45 am.  Students enjoy a broad selection of both classic non-fiction and contemporary high-interest titles.

“My motivation for starting the club was a need to encourage independent reading in what some would term reluctant readers,” states Mr. Bernal.

Mr. Bernal credits the success of his club to the dedication of both students and parents, as well as to the generous reading grant awarded to the club by the Riordan Foundation.

“I was able to purchase various sets of contemporary books across three grade levels,” adds Mr. Bernal.  “Kids simply devour the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series!”

Asked to comment on how the Alexandria Reading Club has affected him, fifth grader Jonathan Duran remarked, “I’m starting to build my speed little by little and this will help me pass the DIBELS.”

Mr. Bernal is eager to continue implementing the club for the foreseeable future, with plans to perhaps add an after school period for students in fourth grade.
